Description

Aggregated income from livestock in Syria

Mapping rural poverty and its links with agricultural resources endowment

Methodology: Livestock income takes into account primary income of live animal and milk sale as well as the added value of fattening and dairy industry. Statistical data were available for relatively large spatial units (province or district). A livestock distribution coefficient depending on land use/land cover was introduced for the spatial downscaling. In order to obtain reasonnable allocation per pixel, a biomass fraction useful to livestock has been defined for five different groups of land use: - rainfed cultivation (0.2) - irrigated cultivation (0.4) - bare land (0.05) - forest (0.1) - rangelands (0.7) Each LULC map unit was then assigned a "Livestock Value". The allocation of livestock income per pixel could then be derived from the ratio of the total income to the sum of livestock values in the administrative units for which income data were available. The unit is Syrian Pounds (SYP) per pixel and per year.
