Description

Majority in land use/land cover in Central and West Asia and North Africa (CWANA) during the period 1987-89

Detect the hotspots of land cover change, land degradation and drought vulnerability

Methodology: The raw data consist in 612 10-daily composites of 8km-AVHRR reflectance data, covering the period from January 1982 until December 2000, retrieved from the NASA Web site for band 1 (0.58-0.68 m.) and band 2 (0.725 - 1.1 m.). Monthly NDVI were calculated as the maximum of groups of 3 consecutive 10-daily NDVI composites. The basic land cover classification algorithm was developed with average values of the classifiers (NDVI max and NDVI mean), which correspond with average weather conditions, and based on a hierarchical decision tree. To take into account the variation in weather conditions in a certain year, an additional algorithm had to be applied. This algorithm correct threshold values of the first classification algorithm with the ratio of the annual maximum NDVI to the average maximum NDVI on a yearly basis. This map represent the majority land cover for the 3-years key period of 1987-1989. If the three years had three different classes, the pixel was classified as 'noise'.
