Description

Vulnerability to drought in Central and West Asia and North Africa (CWANA) during the period 1982-99

Detect the hotspots of land cover change, land degradation and drought vulnerability

Methodology: The mean and standard deviation of the 17 annual maximum NDVI were extracted in order to calculate the coefficient of variation (CV). The CV of the maximum NDVI is a measure of the fluctuations in agricultural or natural biomass: the higher the CV, the more responsive and therefore the more vulnerable the vegetation. To ensure that the CV does not result from land use changes, and hence is attributable to variations in climatic conditions, only CV-values for pixels with stable land cover over time were retained. In order to reduce noise and smoothen the map, a 3x3 median filter was applied. Finally, the missing pixels were filled up with a basic iterative interpolation technique. In different iterations, pixels without CV-values were replaced by the average of those neighbouring pixels, which had a CV-value (minimum of 2 neighbors), until all pixels obtained a CV-value. Only East Pakistan remained without values after 25 iterations.
