Description

Similarity of Iran in climate, land use/land cover and landform to the Merek benchmark site. The biophysical characterisation of benchmark sites is entirely derived from agro-ecological zones, landforms, land use/land cover and soils maps.

Assess the Merek benchmark site representativeness of the broader agro-ecological zones of Iran

Methodology: The similarity analysis includes the following key themes: climate, land use/land cover, soils and landforms. The total similarity is calculated as the product of the climate and the land use/land cover similarity indices. As Merek contains all landform categories (plains, hills and mountains) similarity in landforms was irrelevant to the similarity assessment. The climatic similarity index is the product of air temperature and precipitation similarity indices. The land use/land cover similarity index is based on a simplified 10-class system of which only the following are relevant for the similarity assessment: irrigated farming, rainfed farming, rangelands and forests. The similarity index is either 1 if the pixels belong to the same class or 0 if they do not.
