Description

Total length of moisture-limited growing periods in the Central and West Asia - North Africa and Eurasia regions

Building a new eco-climatic database was established consisting of GIS layers of soil and climatic parameters at 1 km resolution, covering the entire CWANA and Eurasia region.

Methodology: The climatic moisture-limited growing period is calculated by means of a model developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO, 1978). A month is part of a moisture-limited growing period if the ratio of its actual evapotranspiration (AET) to its potential evapotranspiration (PET). is higher than a user-defined threshold (in this study 0.5). The start date of the growing period is obtained from linear interpolation of the AET/PET ratios between the last month that is part of the growing period, and the first month that is not part of the growing period. The end date, inversely, is obtained by linear interpolation of the AET/PET ratios between the last month that is part of the growing period, and the first one that is not part of the growing period. The length of the growing period is deducted from these two dates.
